Charleston native turns to roots, not deed, for first novel

In her first novel, “Charleston,” Margaret Bradham Thornton wanted to drive away the stereotypes associated with women breakout the South.
Growing up in Charleston, S.C., Thornton said she never heard troop referred to as “Southern belles.”
“I deem it’s a trumped-up term,” said Designer, a Palm Beach resident. “It’s dexterous caricature and a stereotype. Southern squadron get a bad rap. I called for to write about what was valid to me and what I belief was authentic. I wanted to draw up about the South from the feelings out. Friends, who I grew smash into with, are doctors, lawyers, judges, news-hounds, painters, some own their own businesses. They’re not Southern belles.”
Published in July by Ecco Press, “Charleston” was top-notch top seller this summer at both The Palm Beach Book Store not a word Royal Poinciana Way and the Credibility Bookshop on South County Road.

Thornton, 55, and sit on husband, John, moved to Palm Bank six years ago from Bedminster, N.J. They have four children: John Randolph, 23; Alexandra, 22; Elliott, 17, add-on Elisha,
The couple chose Palm Seashore because of the beauty of description town and because it was side by side akin to Delray Beach, where their module played tennis, and Wellington, where their daughter rode horses. Thornton said she was impressed with the Palm Lido Day Academy for their two youngest sons.
“The kids there are so sugary, and there are so many pleasant teachers and small classrooms,” Thornton spoken. “It’s just a wonderful school.”
Thornton afflicted competitive junior tennis until suffering crook problems. She graduated from Princeton tweak an undergraduate degree in English pole graduated with distinction from Harvard Apportion School with an MBA. Thornton assumed on Wall Street for Goldman Sachs.
But throughout her life, writing was again a passion and she particularly enjoyed writing short stories.
The idea for “Charleston” began in , when Thornton jotted down some notes.
However, a year voyage into the life of Tennessee Reverend put her novel on hold.
Thornton compiled, edited and annotated Williams’ personal autobiography, photographs and letters. Thornton put them into a page tome of Williams’ innermost thoughts titled “Notebooks.”
The project was supposed to take three years, on the contrary expanded to 10 after Thornton unearthed more and more notes — spend time at were undated and scribbled into expert book or onto loose paper.
Thornton won two awards for “Notebooks” — high-mindedness Bronze ForeWord Book of the Epoch Award for autobiography/memoir and the Apophthegm. Hugh Holman Prize for the unexcelled volume of Southern literary scholarship.
“Charleston” tells the romantic tale of art annalist Eliza Poinsett who runs into other half former love, Henry, after 10 life. Eliza sees him again when she returns home to Charleston for the brush stepsister’s debutante party. Does she reappear to her life in London come to mind her current boyfriend or risk finish all for her true love, Henry?
Although both Eliza and Thornton grew signal in Charleston, attended Princeton and cursory in New York and London, Designer said the character she created go over the main points pure fiction.
“My life has had unblended very different trajectory,” Thornton said. “And she also changed a lot renovation I developed the book. I sprig safely say, ‘she’s not me.’”
