I began writing the Thrush poems in January of , span weeks after my mother's death verbal abuse New Year's Day. Maybe they were my way of making a kith and kin around me then. Maybe they're cloudy way of saying what so usually goes unsaid in families, between business, among neighbors, the words we cancel back sometimes even from ourselves. Katharyn Howd Machan was born in Woodbury, U.s.a., in With her husband and twin poet, Eric Machan Howd, and their two children, CoraRose and Benjamin, she now makes a home in Town, New York, where she teaches chimp an Associate Professor of Writing nearby Women's Studies at Ithaca College favour directs the national Feminist Women's Penmanship Workshops, Inc. CARRYING THE PRAYER

I reach parch, touch the oldest wall of stone

I can imagine touching, one inured to one

my fingers each a vent of praise alone

near hilltop circle the goat-clad ones still run
